Greetings to new and future short-tailed opossum fans! These are the technical details about how to join, guidelines for posting, formats, administrative stuff, etc. See this page for rules.

Posting Formats

Avoid Email Attachments

Not everybody's email can handle attachments, plus many people do not want to receive attachments and worry about viruses. Instead, please upload them to the main group area, then tell us in a post where to find it:

Administrative Stuff

Bouncing

Emails sent to you bounce if your email box is full, your account is inactive, or for other such reasons. Bouncing is a sad thing – you don't get emails from this wonderful group, and you may be unsubscribed by Yahoo. But there is hope! There are options! If you click on "Edit My Membership", you can choose "Message Delivery: No Email" for while you're on vacation or whatever.

If you start bouncing you may be unsubscribed with little or no notice. If you find that you've been dropped from the list (and you didn't want to be dropped) then simply re-subscribe once you've cleared the problem with your e-mail.

Fewer Emails! More Emails!

If you go to "Edit My Membership", you have several options:

  • Individual emails: Receive each post as it is posted. Best if you are hanging onto the edge of your computer chair for every STO update!
  • Daily digest: Receive a large group of messages in 1 email. This is handy and efficient, but makes it hard to respond to posts.
  • Special notices: Only important update emails from the group moderator
  • No email: You can read the messages through the website. It's easy to do, but you might miss some great discussions if you forget to check the website often.

Leaving The List

You can easily go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/short-tailed-opossum/join and choose "Leave Group".

Ghost Members May Be Contacted

People who opt for "no email, web only" and then never post may be contacted at random. If there is no reply within a week that address will be dropped. I know this sounds harsh, but please realize that people join, change their e-mails, lose interest, pass away, etc. Removing "ghosts" allows us to keep a more accurate membership count. There is no penalty! If you want to re-subscribe after being dropped, please feel free to do so at any time.

Posting Content

General

No spam, offensive language, chain letters, virus warnings, etc. Please respect people's copyrights, trademark and personal/property rights. Please keep solicitations for contributions to causes, people, efforts, etc. directly short-tailed opossum related, and ask for prior approval from a moderator. No politics, religion, etc.

Be aware there will be discussions on this list about feeding live animals to short-tailed opossums (such as feeder mice, rodents, crickets, etc). If this offends you, please either don't join the list, or stay quiet about your objections.

Mark Off-Topics Posts

This is just common courtesy. Discussions will hopefully remain generally on topic, but probably won't always. Many of us own other types of exotic pets and some of the issues are similar. If your post strays from the subject please indicate this by adding OT in the subject line for off-topic. Example "OT: Sugar Gliders"
